I have always loved decorating with a farmhouse style theme for Christmas. There’s just something about it that I adore.
It’s cozy, inviting and reminds me of simpler times. You can add all sorts of homemade touches to your home when decorating with a farmhouse Christmas theme. Which means it’s the perfect way to save a bit of money during the already expensive season.
It can be as simple as adding some wood ornaments to your Christmas tree and some greenery wrapped in a cute ribbon.
You really don’t have to match anything which I think adds to the cuteness of this decorating theme.

If you enjoy more traditional country Christmas decorating you can incorporate reds and plaids into your home. Or you can go with more neutral colors and add some natural greenery… There are just so many options when it comes to farmhouse Christmas decorating.
So to help inspire you, below I have listed 10 ideas that I love for decorating your home with classic farmhouse charm… oh and of course I have also included some decorating tips and DIY ideas as well.

Pick Your Farmhouse Christmas Colors
I always recommend picking out some colors you want to incorporate into your home before you go crazy with Christmas decorating… it helps keep you on track with your theme!
When decorating for a farmhouse Christmas I like to use natural textures as a base and pick colors from there.
Some of my favorite farmhouse christmas color schemes include:
Traditional Country Christmas Colors
Deep reds, green, cream and brown. You can never go wrong with this traditional color palette. Use plaid ribbon, wooden ornaments, red berries and greenery.
If you love a classic country Christmas this is for you.

Natural Farmhouse Christmas Colors
White, sage green, oatmeal and wood. This is my favorite color palette to use when I want to create a calm Christmas feel. Simple evergreen, linen ribbon, wood ornaments and lovely white lights will give your home the most perfect festive country welcome.

Vintage Farmhouse Colors
Gold, red, natural greens and rusty metal. If you love to decorate with vintage pieces this color palette will work great for you.
Use old brass bells, vintage lanterns and classic Christmas ornaments to achieve the look.

You don’t have to follow one color palette but try to pick 2 or 3 colors and repeat them throughout your home.
Another tip is to add texture. Baskets, knit blankets, burlap ribbon, greenery and wood are all things that can help create that farmhouse feel.
1. How To Make A Farmhouse Christmas Tree
When I think of a farmhouse Christmas tree I imagine something that looks cosy and homely… don’t you too?
I want it to look like a traditional Christmas tree but with more natural elements and some cute little additions… the more personal the better.

To achieve this look, I decorate my tree with warm white fairy lights and wooden star ornaments, pine cones and rustic christmas bells… I also love making homemade citrus slice ornaments every year too! There’s just something so festive about doing that!
To top off the look I also add some traditional plaid ribbon and a wood bead or popcorn garland.

A wood tree collar or basket is a nice alternative to a tree skirt and will look great underneath your tree.

You don’t have to match everything on your tree. Mix some old favourites with some new farmhouse christmas ornaments and get crafty making your own too!
2. Use Christmas Greenery On Your Mantel
Bringing lots of greenery into your home is a great way to achieve that cozy farmhouse Christmas look. And I think the best place to start is by decorating your fireplace mantel.

Use a thick evergreen garland and add pine cones, red berries and other rustic accessories. Or if you want to keep your colors more neutral you could leave out the red berries and just use green and brown tones.
An easy way to complete the look is to place some antique lanterns at each end of your mantel with candles or fairy lights inside.
If you want to get even fancier, why not hang some rustic christmas bells from your garland using burlap ribbon or jute bows to create that effortless festive farmhouse look.

You don’t need to overdo your mantel decorations. Just having a large garland and a few other accessories will look great.
And as always, make sure you keep any flames away from your holiday decorations… battery candles are always the best option.
3. Decorate Your Front Door For Christmas
I love seeing houses that have a christmas wreath on the front door. Especially when it looks cozy and has that old fashioned country feel like this one here…

Use a christmas wreath with evergreen branches, pine cones and red berries for a traditional country christmas look.
If you want to add even more color then a large bow using buffalo check ribbon or traditional plaid will do the trick.

A Christmas DIY is one of my favorite ways to get into the Christmas spirit and making my your own christmas wreath is top of my craft list. It’s a great way to save a bit of money during the festive season and is also the perfect excuse to get creative and create something beautiful and personal for your home.
All you need to do is buy a cheap fake pine wreath and decorate it with your favourite accessories. You can use floral wire to attach your decorations and swap them around each year.
Another option I have tried before is to take apart an old disused Christmas tree… it’s a great way to upcycle something that would otherwise be thrown away!

Add some accessories to the side of your front door such as an antique lantern, mini christmas tree in a galvanized bucket or a wooden crate with greenery.
It’s a nice way to welcome people into your home with a country christmas vibe.
4. Add Some Plaid To Your Living Room
Traditional plaid is usually what comes to mind when I think of a country christmas.

I like the darker colors of red, green and cream… These colors look great with wood and other farmhouse Christmas decorations.

Swap your normal cushions for some plaid throw pillows and throw a blanket over your sofa… so easy but is the perfect way to bring country charm of your living room.

You don’t need to change everything in your living room for Christmas. Just add some small decorations to give your room that festive feel.
Keep your furniture and other decorations neutral and add some traditional plaid patterns to brighten up the room with some Christmas colors.
5. Decorate With Vintage Items
Some of my favourite farmhouse Christmas decorations are those that look vintage.
Whether its old metal trucks, antique lanterns, wooden boxes or Christmas signs. There are lots of classic country christmas decorations you can use to decorate your home with a vintage feel.

I love those little vintage metal trucks with a mini Christmas tree in the back… Its a cute way to decorate your shelves or sideboard… or even as wall art!
Use items that you already have around your house. An old wooden box can be used to display mini Christmas trees… and a galvanized jug can be used to put some evergreen branches in. The options are literally endless.

If you like to hunt for vintage items then check out your local charity shop, car boot sales or online stores that sell vintage items.
6. Create Your Own Farmhouse Christmas Decorations
There are lots of easy DIY’s you can do to create your own farmhouse Christmas decorations.
You can make your own wood bead garland by threading some wooden beads onto string. Leave some string on each end to tie off or add a tassel.
Drape your wood bead garland on your Christmas tree, on a shelf or around a mini tree.

Create some rustic jute bows to use on your wreath, garland and Christmas ornaments… or a popcorn garland to add that traditional homemade vibe.
If you’re feeling extra creative, you can also paint some cozy wooden houses like these below….

It’s a really cozy way to spend the weekend and you can even gift this craft to friends and family!
These are just some ideas of simple DIY’s you can do to create your own farmhouse Christmas decorations.
7. Display Mini Christmas Trees
I think you can never have too many mini Christmas trees!
Mini trees are a great way to add some Christmas joy to your home. Put them on your kitchen counter, bookshelf, side table or anywhere you can fit them.
Display your mini trees in galvanized buckets, wicker baskets or vintage pots… or make your own free standing tree ornaments like this stunning group of 3 yarn wrapped trees together…

Leave your little trees plain or decorate them with some small wooden ornaments, fairy lights and beads.

If you only have a small space to decorate then one mini tree on your kitchen shelf will do the job.
8. Use Rustic Christmas Bells And Lanterns
Small decorations can make your home look cosy at Christmas.
Rustic Christmas bells and lanterns are two of my favourite farmhouse accessories.

Hang some rustic Christmas bells from your mantel, wreath or wall hook. For an extra farmhouse touch you can use a wide piece of burlap ribbon or jute bow to hang your bells.
Use lanterns to add some cozy lighting around your home…. Place them next to a mini Christmas tree, on your hearth or on your entryway table.

You don’t need a load of lanterns either… Just one lantern with some greenery and pine cones could be the perfect finishing touch to your farmhouse christmas decor.
9. Add Some Uniquely Personal Christmas Ornaments
One of the things I also love about this theme is that you really don’t have to keep your farmhouse Christmas decorations neutral.
Adding ornaments that are personal to you and your family is a great way to create that unique, cozy farmhouse feel.
If you love cows for example then why not add some cute highland cow ornaments to your Christmas tree or if you love a bit of whimsy then some fun felt ornaments will add a pop of color… and cuteness.
It’s a fun way to decorate your tree and adds some personality too.
Look for wooden farm animals, mini barns and rustic stars as well… whatever you love is perfect to hang on your tree!

And if classic, simple farmhouse style is your thing then keep your decorations as simple balls and pinecones and keep colors more neutral with white, gold and brown! Wooden stars are one of my favorite decorations when I’m decorating my home for a cozy Christmas…

10. Create A Farmhouse Christmas Table
Having a cosy Christmas table that you can enjoy your Christmas dinner at is in my opinion top of the priority list.
It doesn’t have to get complicated either… Simply use a table runner and add some evergreen branches down the middle.
With a few candles or lanterns that can be just perfect but you can always keep adding and building from there.

Add some pine cones, red berries and pretty wine glasses to your table.
If you like to use plaid then add a table runner or some napkins… it’s going to create that effortless country charm!
Use white plates and linen napkins to compliment the plaid and add some greenery to each place setting.

To top off the look, create some wooden ornaments as place cards or as gifts for your guests.
Most importantly, I like to make sure my table is comfortable and has enough space for everyone to eat their Christmas dinner.

Before You Go...
Before You Go...
What I love about Farmhouse Christmas décor is that it can be done on any budget and does not have to be matched or all new each year.
Evergreen branches, your favorite plaid blanket and homemade ornaments along with decorations you have acquired over the years will give your home that cozy christmas atmosphere.
Take one or two of these ideas that speak to you. Whether its a gorgeous Farmhouse Christmas Tree or creating your own ornaments. Maybe even add some holiday cheer to an area you tend to overlook.
